It has emerged that the next dead pop star to perform at a stadium near you could be Michael Jackson. How? Using the same technology that recreated the late rapper Tupac Shakur at Coachella last weekend. If you missed it, this was the festival's key talking point. Looking at his physical characteristics in old footage, the clever dudes at Hollywood CGi company Digital Domain made a spookily realistic 2-D video projection using a technique called Pepper's Ghost. The "hologram" led critics to predict the future of live entertainment would be Lazarus-style resurrections, though many thought it macabre. Watch the clip below, it's quite amazing.
The Michael Jackson posthumous parade show little sign of wheezing to a halt so it was no surprise to hear Jackie Jackson, one of the brothers, suggest a hologram may be joining the Jackson 5 for their upcoming tour. Too soon? Probably. I hope Whitney's people aren't getting any ideas.
As impressive as it looks, it's unlikely the musical hologram will catch on. For a start, it's so expensive (reports say the Tupac hologram cost £6.3 million to make) and, ultimately, just a cool gimmick. I doubt I'd pay to see a hologrammed Hank Williams, Mozart or Rudolf Nureyev; I'd prefer to leave them in the past and focus on the future. The exciting part of this story is what the hologram could lead to. Watching Alien last night, it struck me that one day we might be able to watch 3D hologram films in our living rooms, see a spaceship detonate above our feet, or scream at a 'real' monster jumping out from behind the sofa. Perhaps I could have a figure of Thom Yorke doing this on my desk at work. But if the hologram is a game-changer for entertainment, let's leave the dead to rest in peace.

create holograms is now very expensive, if what they tell us is true, but once opened the way costs are lowered significantly. In principle, the novelty will attract our attention, then it will become normal and at this point the technology will have a development that we will not be able to distinguish what is real and what is not real.
